Independent Financial Advisers

Investment Tips

Experience is what we get when we do not get what we want, or so the saying goes.

Therefore, after many years of giving sound financial advice to thousands of clients, here are some top Investment Tips we would give to anyone. This list is not exhaustive and, of course, is not meant to substitute for good financial advice. Some are drawn from real situations we have encountered. Some are obvious, some not.

I

If it looks too good to be true, it probably is too good to be true.

II

Decide whether you are a saver or investor. Savers don't like the stock market and, for that reason alone, probably should not invest in it.

III

Always keep an adequate cash 'buffer' — money that you may need to call upon at short notice. In the short-term, 'cash is always king'.

IV

The old saying, 'time not timing' is true. Even an investment purchased at what, with hindsight, may be seen to be the wrong time may recover.

V

Don't purchase a 'bag of nails'. In other words, don't pick investments randomly but, rather, develop a STRATEGY to help you achieve your objectives.

VI

Don't commit large amounts of money to a single share. By doing so you will be depending on the fortune of one company, its management and its business model. Much better to spread the risk by purchasing a basket of investments. Or, better still for most people, use a collective investment such as a unit trust, investment bond or OEIC (Open Ended Investment Company).

VII

DON'T LIVE ON YOUR CAPITAL — instead, live on the INCOME. This is the mistake lottery winners typically make; no matter how much capital, the result is always the same. NOTHING!

VIII

It's galling to see an investment go down in value, but it's gutting to sell it at the bottom of the market only to see the market recover.

IX

You get what you pay for.

X

Don't get emotionally attached to an investment.
